Greg Bound – Acute neck injury requiring 3-level disc removal and block spinal fusion
‘Mal here is a quick update for your files. I have been extremely active and sporting enthusiast all my life. During the past 10-years I have suffered general back and neck problems requiring the odd physio and osteo treatment. In June 2006, whilst water skiing I injured my neck causing massive pain and weakness down my left side. Within 2 weeks of the incident I experienced severe muscle wasting to the left side of my back and arm; in fact I had lost about 70% of the strength and use of my arm. My doctor arranged an MRI scan and I was quickly referred to a Neurosurgeon for his opinion. The Neuro confirmed not only the immediate disc problem but that I also had several other discs that required his attention. The Neuro recommended surgery with a very short time frame and proposed a 3-disc level fusion with 3 discs to be removed and replaced with artificial disc material! The Neuro discussed at length the reason for surgery and stated that I could potentially lose function of my left arm and that the damage would be permanent. Obviously I was not entirely satisfied with the prospect of surgery; I continued taking Morphine to control the pain whilst looking at other options. During this period I was introduced to Hyperbaric and your services; the fact that your recommendation was non-invasive and you have an exhaustive collection of other spinal cases with excellent outcomes - I felt confident to undertake a trial period. Within 20 hours I was able to reduce my reliance on Pain killers and by 40 hrs was off them completely. At 60 hours I took a 3 week break from treatment and resumed light activity around the farm. At this stage I noticed my activity levels still impacted on my pain levels. Currently I am close to the 100-hour mark, my pain levels have diminished dramatically and overall my condition is stable. Surgery is NOT an option at this point! Thank you – Greg.’
